Yoon Suk Yeol Arrested Over South Korea's Martial Law Controversy

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested Wednesday. The country’s anti-corruption agency detained him for questioning. Investigators are probing allegations linked to his martial law declaration last month.

This is the first time a sitting South Korean president has been arrested. Yoon faces accusations of leading an insurrection. This charge could result in life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The arrest ends weeks of tension. Yoon had barricaded himself in his residence with his Presidential Security Service. Earlier attempts to arrest him failed. Soldiers and security personnel had blocked investigators from entering his compound.

After his arrest, Yoon released a pre-recorded video. He called the investigations “illegal” and criticized the country’s legal system. He claimed his response aimed to avoid bloodshed.

Authorities now have 48 hours to seek a formal arrest warrant. Demonstrations broke out near Yoon’s residence. Protesters demanded his resignation. Supporters argued the impeachment is invalid.

Yoon’s troubles began on December 3. He declared martial law, citing opposition lawmakers for paralyzing state functions. The move sparked backlash, including from his own party. Parliament reversed his decree within hours.

The Constitutional Court is reviewing Yoon’s impeachment. It is also considering cases against other officials in his administration. Yoon’s impeachment trial started Tuesday but was delayed. He refused to attend. The trial will continue Thursday, with or without him.

South Korea remains politically unstable. Parliament recently impeached the prime minister and acting president. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok now serves as acting president.

The Constitutional Court has also promised to prioritize Yoon’s case. The political crisis continues to deepen.
