WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has pledged to increase global support for Sudan’s health system. He made this promise following talks with Sudan’s Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, in Port Sudan.
Tedros emphasized the urgent need for more international aid. Ibrahim expects this visit to strengthen the partnership between Sudan and the WHO, which has already delivered considerable support.
Tedros received a briefing on the humanitarian situation from Malik Agar, Deputy Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council. He arrived in Sudan on Saturday and plans to meet with senior officials and UN representatives. He will also visit hospitals and shelters for displaced individuals.
Heavy rains recently caused 205 deaths in Sudan and resulted in 5,081 cholera cases, including 176 fatalities. Since April 15, 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has claimed at least 16,650 lives. The UN reports that around 10.7 million people remain displaced within Sudan, and 2.2 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries.
