Harris Leads Trump in Recent Polls Ahead of DNC

Polls show Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Donald Trump since she became the Democratic presidential nominee. Heading into this week’s Democratic National Convention, Harris has a lead of three points or more in several recent polls.

A Morning Consult poll from Tuesday shows Harris ahead of Trump 48% to 44%. This is up from her two-point lead last week. The poll also shows Harris leading independents 42% to 38%, with her approval rating at 50%. The margin of error is 1 point, and the survey was conducted from August 16 to 18. The Washington Post poll reports Harris leading 49% to 45% among registered voters and 51% to 45% among likely voters.

A CBS and YouGov poll from Sunday gives Harris a three-point edge over Trump among likely voters. However, the candidates are tied at 50% in battleground states. An Emerson College poll from Thursday shows Harris ahead 50% to 46% among 1,000 likely voters. Only one major poll this week  shows Trump leading 50% to 49% among registered voters.

A Monmouth University survey from August 14 finds 48% of registered voters are likely to support Harris in November, while 43% support Trump. An Economist/YouGov poll from August 11-13 shows Harris leading 46% to 44% in a five-way race with third-party candidates.

Additional polls this month also show Harris leading. A Reuters/Ipsos poll from August 8 gives her a 42% to 37% lead, and an NPR/PBS News/Marist poll from August 6 shows her ahead 48% to 45%.

Since President Joe Biden dropped out, Trump has led in at least eight other polls. But Harris has been closing the gap and increasing her approval ratings since her candidacy announcement.
