The United States US supports Kenya’s Food and Feed Safety Control Coordination Bill, 2023. This bill aims to boost food safety and quality. It is currently under review by Kenya’s National Assembly.
The Bill has returned from the Senate with amendments and has the US Department of Agriculture backing USDA. Damian Ferrese from USDA stressed their commitment to improving food security in Kenya. He spoke at a workshop in Nairobi to aid Kenyan food businesses.
The USDA, with its partner FAEA, invested over $500,000 to help finalize the Bill. FAEA’s Gina Tumbarello emphasized the goal of protecting public health while supporting Kenya’s food industry.
The new food controller will ensure compliance with safety standards from various agencies, including health ministries and the AFA. This role will improve traceability of food products, crucial for isolating harmful produce and safeguarding health.
An IFPRI report highlights that many Kenyan food products currently lack traceability, which poses safety risks.
