University of Nairobi Council appoints Margaret Jesang as acting VC, Kiama Suspended. Professor Margret Jesang Hutchinson named the acting vice-chancellor of the University of Nairobi by the council.
The council announced in a communiqué to the university community that Jesang, in his capacity as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise (RIE), takes up the new position for a triennial period.
The council announced that Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama Gitahi had been suspended from his position for three months until the disciplinary procedure was completed. This suspension began on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau also named as the acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, of Academic Affairs (AA), as part of the recent changes.
The adjustments come after a protracted tug-of-war between Kiama and the council.
The council has placed the beleaguered vice chancellor on mandatory leave on multiple occasions. Nevertheless, despite the hostility, an unwavering Kiama managed to return to the institution’s top position.
The University of Nairobi Council also named Ayub Gitau, former Dean Faculty of Engineering. As acting Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs.
Francis Mulaa, former Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology. He assumes the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research Innovation and Enterprise in an acting capacity.
