A gunman shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday. The shooting occurred outside the Hilton Midtown hotel. Thompson, 50, was walking to his company’s conference when the shooter approached and fired multiple shots.
The gunman, described as a light-skinned male with a gray backpack, fled after the attack. The suspect then fled on an e-Citi bike, which tracked into Central Park. Investigators recovered live rounds and discharged shell casings at the scene.
Authorities say the gunman premeditated the killing. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information. Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized their commitment to apprehending the suspect. UnitedHealth Group expressed deep sadness over Thompson’s death, calling him a respected leader and colleague.
CEO Andrew Witty described Thompson as an extraordinary individual who impacted many lives. Due to the tragedy, the company canceled the investor conference.
He is survived by his wife and two children. The NYPD has increased its presence in Manhattan, especially near Rockefeller Center, ahead of the Christmas tree lighting event. Authorities are working to track the suspect using surveillance footage and GPS data from the e-Citi bike. (Courtesy of CNN)
