The United States has condemned the Kenya Kwanza government’s response to recent protests. It has called for immediate action against human rights violators. During her visit, Uzra Zeya, the US Department of State Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, expressed concern over police brutality, noting it breaches Kenya’s Constitution.
At the end of her two-day visit to Kenya, Ms. Zeya reaffirmed the United States commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights amid reports of forced disappearances, abductions, and arbitrary arrests. Speaking at the US embassy before her departure, she highlighted the importance of free expression, assembly, and press for a thriving democracy. She shared these concerns in meetings with President William Ruto, state agencies, and top government officials.
“I critisized the violence against peaceful protesters, human rights defenders, and journalists,” Ms. Zeya said. He also called for the protection of fundamental freedoms, peaceful assembly, and expression, as enshrined in the Constitution. “I also emphasized the need for security forces to exercise restraint. By rejecting violence, and ensure prompt investigations and accountability for disappearances, excessive use of force, and other rights abuses.” Zeya said.
Ms. Zeya noted that her visit came at a challenging time for Kenya. “I encouraged President Ruto to act on his recent pledges to strengthen the rule of law. Also to champion anti-corruption initiatives, and advance accountability within his government,” she said.
