Tunisian President Kais Saied has reshuffled his Cabinet ahead of the October 6 presidential election. The reshuffle involves 19 ministers, including those in Defence, Foreign Affairs, and the Economy. Khaled Shili is now the Defence Minister. Mohamed Ali Nafti has been named Foreign Affairs Minister. These changes seem to address ongoing challenges and election preparations.
Earlier this month, Saied dismissed Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani. He replaced him with Kamel Maddouri, the former Tunisian Social Affairs Minister. Despite the reshuffle, the Ministers of Finance, Justice, and the Interior retained their roles. The reshuffle occurs during a deepening financial crisis and widespread public frustration. Many Tunisian face frequent water and electricity outages, along with shortages of goods and medicines. Saied’s move may be aimed at energizing the government and gaining voter support.
Saied, who took control in 2021 after dissolving the elected parliament, is running for re-election. He faces two challengers in this presidential race. This reshuffle shows his determination to retain power. He is navigating the country through significant challenges as he seeks another term.
