The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) have ended the teachers’ strike. They filed a consent in the Employment and Labour Relations Court to formalize this. The strike began on August 26 but ended after the parties agreed to resolve issues through negotiations. Justice Anna Ngibuini Mwaure made the consent a court order.
As part of the deal, TSC and Kuppet withdrew all lawsuits against each other. The decision to end the strike has received mixed reactions from teachers. Some criticized the union leaders for not securing a stronger agreement. Kuppet Secretary-General Akelo Misori defended the decision. He said the consent is more binding than a return-to-work formula because it is now a court order.
Speaking in Mombasa, Misori addressed concerns from some leaders who felt left out. He assured them that proper communication was used and the main issues were resolved.
Francis Atwoli, Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu), also supported Kuppet’s decision. He said the leaders acted within their mandate. Atwoli urged those unhappy with the decision to respect their leaders’ actions.
