Trump’s Exit from WHO Triggers a Global Health Crisis

Trump’s Withdrawal Sparks Crisis at WHO

The WHO is a major force in global health. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from the organization threatens its work. His executive order cuts US funding, support, and resources. This marks his second attempt to pull the US out of WHO.

The US is WHO’s largest donor, providing 18% of its total budget. It owes $264 million in assessed contributions for 2024-2025, which remains unpaid. It also provides $442 million in voluntary contributions. These funds support HIV/AIDS response, polio eradication, and health emergencies.

WHO’s programs in Africa already face severe underfunding. The loss of US funds could also reduce access to HIV/AIDS treatment, tuberculosis care, and malaria prevention. Maternal and child health services may also suffer. This could increase illness and death rates across the continent.

In 2020, Europe helped fill the funding gap when Trump first withheld WHO funds. Now, economic challenges make a repeat unlikely. WHO faces a $3.3 billion shortfall for its 2025-2028 strategy. Without alternative funding, African governments will struggle to sustain health programs.

Trump’s decision comes as Africa battles disease outbreaks. The US has helped WHO respond to Marburg virus, mpox, and other health crises. Tanzania recently confirmed a new Marburg outbreak. Without US involvement, Africa’s ability to manage health emergencies will weaken.

The US withdrawal also threatens global health governance. The US played a key role in shaping WHO policies and negotiating a Pandemic Agreement. Leaving WHO could undermine efforts for equitable vaccine distribution and global health security.

The African Union and world leaders urge Trump to reconsider. WHO is the only global body with the authority and expertise to lead health responses. The world must act to protect its essential work in Africa and beyond.
