Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic opponent Kamala Harris will debate on ABC on September 10. This event marks their first direct confrontation, with polls suggesting a close race. At a news conference at his Palm Beach, Florida residence, Trump expressed interest in holding additional debates on September 4 and September 25, which would be broadcast on Fox and NBC.
Harris took to X to share her enthusiasm for the September 10 debate, noting that Trump had “finally committed.” After a campaign stop near Detroit, she told reporters that she was open to more debates. Although a campaign official confirmed that the September 4 Fox debate was off the table.
The likelihood of future debates depends on Trump’s participation in the September 10 event on ABC. Also according to the Harris campaign. They have previously resisted a Fox debate, preferring networks that recently hosted primary debates for both parties. Initially, Biden and Trump agreed on two debates, with the September 10 debate set as the second, following their June 27 debate on CNN.
A recent Ipsos poll shows Harris widening her lead over Trump since late July, now ahead 42% to 37%. This is an increase from a July 22-23 Reuters/Ipsos poll that had her leading 37% to 34%. Thursday’s news conference in Palm Beach was Trump’s first public appearance since Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Harris and Walz have since led rallies in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
