Titmus defends 400-metre freestyle title. In one of the most anticipated races of the Paris Games, 400-meter freestyle champion Ariarne Titmus defeated American Katie Ledecky once more.
In an event Ledecky won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Titmus, the Australian celebrity dubbed “The Terminator,” triumphed, giving Ledecky a second consecutive loss in the competition.
Titmus led the entire way, her fingernails painted an Aussie golden color. Summer McIntosh, a Canadian sensation, presented the 23-year-old with her toughest test. However, she prevailed handily in three minutes and 57.49 seconds.
“I probably felt the expectation and pressure for this race more than anything in my life. To be honest, and I’m pretty good at handling the pressure but I’ve definitely felt it,” Titmus said.
“I’m really pleased with my own result, and I feel incredibly honored to have participated in the race and been around such luminaries as Katie.
As an athlete, she inspires me greatly, and we don’t have any rivalries outside of the racetrack. “As a person, I truly admire her,” Titmus continued.
McIntosh, a 17-year-old from Canada, won the silver in 3:58.37. While Ledecky, an American, finished behind her and took home the bronze in 4:00.86. Titmus defends 400-metre freestyle title
Ledecky still holds the record for the most individual gold medals won by a female swimmer in Olympic history with six from her outstanding career.
