The official death toll from Ethiopian landslides has increased to 229. According to local authorities, there have been 229 deaths in Ethiopia as a result of mudslides, and there’s a chance that figure may continue to climb.

Monday’s intense rains in the isolated southern region of the country, Gofa Zone, were the cause of the landslide.

After a group of people got drenched in mud while attempting to save others, several persons are still missing.

Images of the situation showed people picking through the muck with their bare hands and no signs of emergency personnel.

What details about the victims do we know?
Among the victims, according to the Gofa Zone Communications Affairs Department, were 81 women and 148 males.

The search for bodies was “continuing vigorously,” it said.
