This murder could undermine President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s reputation as a reformer. Since taking office three years ago, succeeding John Magufuli, she has worked to reduce political repression. Kibao’s body was discovered on Saturday morning, just one day after his abduction from a bus en route to Tanga.
Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe reported that Kibao endured brutal beatings and had acid poured on him. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to confirm these details.
In response, President Hassan has launched an investigation into Kibao’s death. She has condemned the violence and underscored her government’s stance against such acts. “Our country is democratic, and every citizen has the right to live,” she asserted on X, formerly Twitter.
Meanwhile, police are actively investigating the case. Mbowe has called for a judicial commission to probe the incident, suggesting possible police involvement.
Kibao’s death comes on the heels of a recent crackdown on Chadema supporters, which included the brief detention of over 500 members last month. Although President Hassan has made strides in easing restrictions, rights groups continue to report ongoing arbitrary detentions.
