Suspected al-Shabaab Attack in Mandera Leaves Four Injured

A roadside explosion injured four people in Mandera on Thursday. Authorities believe al-Shabaab militants planted the device. The explosive struck a contractor’s vehicle. The team worked on a power line between Elwak and Wargadud. Mandera South Deputy County Commissioner Julius Otunga confirmed the attack. Rescue teams took the injured to Elwak Referral Hospital.

The explosion targeted travelers on the Elwak-Rhamu-Mandera road. Fortunately, the passengers only sustained minor injuries. The area has faced several recent al-shabaab attacks. On September 14, suspected al-shabaab attackers burned two lorries in a separate incident.

Ibrahim Yusuf Haji reported another attack. Armed men stopped his lorry near the Mandera-Wajir border. They searched his vehicle for four police reservists who had boarded earlier. The reservists left before the attack. The attackers then burned two other lorries and ordered Haji to drive to Elwak.

On September 8, suspected al-Shabaab fighters attempted to attack the Elrhamu security camp. The attack came just before Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli arrived in Mandera.
