Sudan Floods Intensify Suffering Amid Ongoing Conflict

In eastern Sudan, floods have worsened the hardships faced by people already suffering from 500 days of intense conflict between the army and the paramilitary RSF. Ahmed Hadab lost his home to the floods. He now survives on water mixed with milk from his last goat. “We have no food,” he said after days of searching for shelter. “The torrent took our sorghum and flour, and I lost two goats and my donkey.”

This month’s heavy rains have devastated a war-torn country. The floods have spread destruction beyond conflict zones. Near Tokar, an area previously untouched by violence, people used ropes to pull each other to safety from a collapsed bridge.

In eastern Red Sea State, the Arbaat Dam’s collapse on Sunday threatens Port Sudan’s freshwater supply. Port Sudan, a refuge for the government, aid agencies, and displaced people, now faces a new crisis. The dam’s collapse left at least 64 people missing and many stranded on higher ground without food.

In Sudan’s Northern State, largely unaffected by the conflict, floods have displaced hundreds. In Darfur, where millions face extreme hunger, rains have further damaged camps and delayed crucial aid, according to the World Food Programme.

The United Nations estimates over 300,000 people are affected by the flooding. Cholera cases are rising, with 1,351 reported so far. The army-aligned health ministry struggles to access areas controlled by the RSF, making the situation even more dire.

Extreme rains, hitting desert areas, are likely due to climate change, says Abulgasim Musa, head of Sudan’s Early Warning meteorological unit.
