Recent torrential rains have caused severe flooding in Sudan, resulting in at least 32 deaths and 107 injuries. The Health Ministry announced on Monday that the floods have affected seven states, damaging 5,575 homes.
Al-Fadil Mohamed Mahmoud, director of the Health Ministry’s emergency services, reported an increase in waterborne illnesses due to the floods. Kassala State has seen 102 cases of diarrhea, Khartoum four cases, and Gezira State 16 cases. Despite these issues, other areas remain stable. The ministry is actively working to prevent epidemics that can follow heavy rains.
Earlier warnings from the Sudanese Meteorological Authority highlighted rising water levels in the Gash River, which runs through Kassala City. Residents are advised to avoid the riverbanks to prevent accidents and drownings.
Flooding is a recurring problem in Sudan, typically occurring from June to October. This ongoing issue shows the need for effective preparation and response strategies. Government and health officials are addressing the immediate needs of those affected and working to reduce further health risks related to the severe weather.
