Sudan’s Health Ministry has reported a severe cholera outbreak. The country has seen over 9,500 cases and 315 deaths. As of Sunday, the total number of infections in Sudan is 9,533. Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim declared the outbreak on August 17. The spread is due to worsening environmental conditions and contaminated water, both caused by the ongoing conflict.
The war between Sudan army and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023. It has worsened living conditions and spread several deadly diseases. In addition to cholera, there are now cases of malaria, measles, and dengue fever. These diseases have caused hundreds of deaths. Areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation are particularly hard hit.
The fighting has also caused widespread devastation. It has resulted in a large number of deaths and displaced millions. The lack of infrastructure and basic services has made it hard to contain the outbreaks. This has increased risks for displaced people.
Humanitarian organizations and health officials are trying to control the cholera outbreak. However, ongoing violence is making it difficult to reach affected areas. Access to medical supplies, clean water, and safe living conditions remains a major challenge.
Sudan health system is already under strain and struggling to handle the impact of the war and disease outbreaks. The conflict has created conditions where diseases like cholera can thrive, putting millions at risk. Immediate intervention is crucial to prevent further loss of life.
