Slovakia Secures Putin’s Promise for Alternative Gas Routes

Slovakia Secures Putin’s Promise for Alternative Gas Routes

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Slovakia that Gazprom would deliver gas through alternative routes. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico shared this after meeting Putin on December 22. Their talks focused on gas supplies and the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine refused to extend its gas transit deal with Russia. This decision aimed to cut Moscow’s war funding. It also disrupted Slovakia’s gas flow through Ukraine. Fico threatened to retaliate, as Slovakia relied on this route to lower costs and earn transit revenue.

“Our contract with Gazprom requires them to deliver gas,” Fico said in parliament. He mentioned the southern route through Türkiye as an option. He also confirmed Slovakia’s gas needs remain covered by storage facilities.

Fico said Putin guaranteed that Russia would honor its commitments. However, TurkStream’s capacity, which connects Russian gas to Europe via Türkiye, remains limited. Fico suggested additional supplies might come through Slovakia’s links with Western Europe.

Ukraine blamed Russia and some politicians for the situation. It accused them of refusing to reduce dependence on Moscow.
