Sinwar’s Death: A Win for Israel, but Hostages, Peace Unclear

Sinwar’s death, a Hamas leader, is a significant victory for Israel. Sinwar led a major attack that shook Israel’s security. Experts, however, warn that his death might not lead to the immediate release of Israeli hostages or end the conflict in Gaza.

Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer, sees this as a chance for change. He suggests Israel could declare victory and push for a ceasefire in Gaza. Sinwar had been a main target since Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, killing 1,200 people and capturing over 200 hostages. Israeli troops, with U.S. help, located Sinwar during a routine patrol.

U.S. officials saw Sinwar as a barrier to peace talks and hostage releases. His death might open the door for new peace efforts in Gaza. The Biden administration is considering a multinational peacekeeping force, possibly with the UAE. Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged to work with allies to end the conflict and rebuild Gaza.

Experts still urge caution. Removing leaders like Sinwar has often brought only short-term gains. Hamas might regroup, with its political leaders in Qatar taking a more practical approach.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that Israel’s mission continues. He promised to secure the return of all hostages. Sinwar’s death is a setback for Hamas, but the conflict’s resolution remains unclear. (NBC News)
