Ruto’s Strategy to Address Political Unrest in Mt. Kenya

Ruto’s Strategy to Address Political Unrest in Mt. Kenya

President William Ruto visited former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s rural home in Ichaweri, Gatundu South. The private meeting lasted two hours. The talks sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation between the two leaders.

President Ruto arrived at 2:45 pm aboard one of three helicopters. The visit surprised Kenyatta’s staff, who only realized it when the helicopters landed. Local security officials were also unaware of the visit.

The meeting follows years of strained relations between Ruto and Kenyatta. Their fallout included public disagreements and accusations of political retribution. Ruto’s support in Mt. Kenya has also declined. This shift is tied to Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment as Deputy President and the collapse of the Finance Bill 2024.

Reports suggest Ruto sought the meeting to address dissatisfaction in Mt. Kenya. He also aimed to prevent a possible alliance between Kenyatta and Gachagua ahead of the 2027 elections. The talks followed Kenyatta’s recent appearance at Kalonzo Musyoka’s daughter’s wedding, which stirred political excitement.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki welcomed the meeting. He called it vital for unity and stability. Insiders say Ruto wanted an honest discussion with Kenyatta. He sought insights without interference from political allies.

Observers view the visit as a strategic move. It may help Ruto stabilize his political base, ease regional tensions, and promote national unity.
