Ruto to Announce Raila's AUC Chairmanship Bid

President William Ruto will announce Raila Odinga as Kenya’s candidate for AUC chairmanship next Tuesday. This event marks the official start of Odinga’s campaign. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that Ruto will present the campaign plan.

Mudavadi also emphasized that Odinga’s bid for the AUC chairmanship is a national mission. “This is a national mission,” said Mudavadi. “Raila Odinga embodies Kenya’s voice and aspirations.” He urged Kenyans to support Odinga, comparing the campaign to backing athletes at the Olympics. President Ruto will also introduce Odinga’s campaign team, including key figures like former US Ambassador Elkanah Odembo and Professor Makau Mutua.

Mudavadi also highlighted Odinga’s vision for the AUC, which focuses on African integration, infrastructure, economic transformation, and more. Odinga thanked the government for formalizing his candidacy, expressing readiness for the campaign. He again stressed the need to strengthen the African Union to achieve a united, prosperous Africa. If elected, Odinga will address health, education, and employment challenges in Africa.

Odinga also emphasized the importance of addressing climate change, calling for a unified African voice on the issue. The announcement was attended by AUC campaign strategists and key government officials. Mudavadi did not disclose the campaign budget. In a previous bid for the AUC chairmanship, Kenya spent KSh 437.7 million, exceeding the set budget by KSh 52 million.
