During a recent visit to Nakuru County, President William Ruto announced the potential revival of the Kazi Mtaani program. This move reflects his commitment to community needs. Launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kazi Mtaani aimed to create job opportunities for youth through public infrastructure projects. However, the program was halted in September 2022 due to concerns about misuse of public funds.
Ruto stated, “There are women here who have told me they want Kazi Mtaani. Starting next week, 500 people will be working here under that plan.” Despite this announcement, it’s unclear if the program will be out nationwide or only Nakuru. Additionally, Ruto’s administration has not yet developed a policy or budget for the program, raising questions about its broader implementation and sustainability.
Previously, Ruto had described Kazi Mtaani as outdated, advocating for job creation through affordable housing instead. The revived initiative will similarly engage 500 youth from every region, ensuring widespread employment opportunities.
Kazi Mtaani is to support other Kenya Kwanza initiatives aimed at reducing unemployment, including:
Using technology to generate employment opportunities.
Facilitating the export of skilled and unskilled labor to international markets.
Addressing housing needs while creating numerous jobs in construction and related sectors.
These combined efforts represent a comprehensive strategy to tackle youth unemployment and boost economic growth in Kenya. The Nakuru community and the entire nation eagerly anticipates the positive impact of Kazi Mtaanis return.
