On Wednesday night, Russian airstrikes hit Kyiv, disrupting the power grid. Ukraine’s air defenses fought missiles and drones for five hours, but the attack injured at least two people, according to emergency services. The strikes damaged a kindergarten, a gas pipe, and around 20 vehicles.
Russian forces also fired three Kinzhal ballistic missiles at Starokostiantyniv in Western Ukraine. The target remains undisclosed, suggesting it may have been a military or energy site.
Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, a central part of its strategy since the invasion. The U.N. estimates that these strikes have damaged 70% of Ukraine’s power generation, raising fears of further displacement as winter nears.
As winter approaches, the worsening damage to the power grid threatens millions in Ukraine. President Zelensky will meet with U.S. President Biden to secure more advanced air defense systems, critical for Ukraine’s defense. The U.S. has pledged an additional $8 billion to support these efforts.
This week’s attacks caused blackouts in regions like Ivano-Frankivsk and Mykolaiv. Despite Ukraine’s defenses intercepting several missiles and drones, the strikes still caused destruction. In Odesa, a missile killed a 62-year-old woman, while 10 people were injured in Zaporizhzhia. (Newsweek)
