Russia sees the US and its allies as involved in the Ukraine conflict. If Western countries allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons, Russia may respond more aggressively. Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia’s Duma, said, “Washington and European states are becoming parties to the war in Ukraine.”
Volodin named the US, Germany, France, and Britain as key players. On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said his administration is “working that out now” about lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s long-range weapons. Reports say the US is close to an agreement to provide these weapons. However, it might take months to resolve technical issues. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Iran of escalating tensions by supplying Russia with ballistic missiles. Iran calls this accusation “ugly propaganda.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is asking Western nations for longer-range missiles. He also wants restrictions lifted on targeting sites within Russians. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in June that Russia might deploy conventional missiles near the US and its European allies if Ukraine strikes deep into Russia. The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro- president was removed and Russia annexed Crimea. Fighting continues between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces.
