Russia has issued a strong warning to the West by updating its nuclear policy. On Thursday, the Kremlin said these changes are a clear signal. President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia could use nuclear weapons if attacked. He added that any strike supported by a nuclear power would be seen as a joint attack.
This shift responds to US and UK discussions about allowing Ukraine to use Western missiles against Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the changes to the nuclear doctrine. He stressed that this message to the West is serious. Any attack on Russia, even without nuclear weapons, will have severe consequences.
Peskov described the situation as an “unprecedented confrontation.” He blamed the involvement of Western nuclear powers in the Ukraine conflict. The Kremlin is still deciding whether to make the policy changes public.
Russia’s nuclear doctrine, last updated in 2020, allows nuclear strikes if the state faces a nuclear or severe conventional threat. When asked about resuming nuclear tests, Peskov declined to answer. He cited the classified nature of the recent discussions.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden announced over $8 billion in military aid to Ukraine. The package includes advanced weapons like the Joint Standoff Weapon. This missile can hit targets up to 130 kilometers away. Biden confirmed the US commitment to helping Ukraine win the war. Plans include boosting Ukraine’s air defenses and training more F-16 pilots.
