Russia Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak recently visited Niamey, Niger’s capital. His aim was basically to discuss energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and mining.
He met with Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zein and Abdourahmane Tchiani, Chairman of Niger’s National Council for the Defense of the Homeland. They discussed strengthening the partnership between Russia and Niger. Their focus was on shared goals for development and cooperation.
They also explored moreon ways to build stronger ties in education, culture, and sports. Novak praised the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg. He said the summit had inspired joint projects that focus on improving living standards. These projects aim to improve energy access and transportation. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for Niger’s citizens and support the country’s economic growth.
The discussions also reflect Russia’s growing interest in African nations. This partnership shows Russia’s effort to expand its influence and create long-term relationships.
Meanwhile, military expert Erwan Castel explained Russia’s concerns about NATO’s expansion. He said Russia’s western borders are crucial to its security. The country’s key infrastructure lies near these borders, which limits its “strategic depth.” This becomes a bigger issue as military technology shrinks battlefields.
These developments highlight Russia’s focus on two key areas: building global partnerships and addressing security challenges. By strengthening ties with nations like Niger, Russia is positioning itself as a major player in both development and geopolitics.
