Russia has developed a new mRNA cancer vaccine. The government plans to release it in early 2025. Patients will receive the vaccine free of charge.
Andrey Kaprin confirmed the breakthrough. He directs the Radiology Medical Research Center under Russia’s Ministry of Health. He also told Radio Rossiya the vaccine will be available at no cost.
Pre-clinical trials show promising results. The vaccine also reduces tumor growth and prevents cancer spread. Alexander Gintsburg emphasized these findings. He leads the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology. “The vaccine suppresses tumor development and metastases,” Gintsburg stated.
President Vladimir Putin earlier mentioned progress in cancer vaccines. Gintsburg explained how artificial intelligence could help. AI can speed up the creation of personalized vaccines. Researchers could design tailored vaccines in under an hour. “Neural network computing will make customization faster,” Gintsburg said.
mRNA vaccines differ from traditional ones. They also deliver genetic instructions to body cells. These instructions also help cells produce antigens. Antigens teach the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Cancer mRNA vaccines target multiple tumor antigens. COVID-19 mRNA vaccines target only one protein. Cancer vaccines train the immune system to fight unique cancers. Making personalized vaccines currently takes two months.
Russia is not alone in this field. Companies like Moderna, Merck, BioNTech, and CureVac also develop mRNA cancer vaccines. These advancements use AI and biotechnology. Together, they mark a major step in personalized cancer treatment. (Economic Times)
