Rigathi Gachagua’s Political Journey, A Rapid Rise and Challenges

Rigathi Gachagua's Political Journey, A Rapid Rise and Challenges
Born on February 28, 1965, in Ruguru village, Mathira, Nyeri County, Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua’s political rise has been fast. He served just one term as Mathira MP. He then became President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 General Election. However, many Kenya Kwanza leaders preferred Kithure Kindiki for the role. During the swearing-in at Kasarani in September 2022, Gachagua stepped ahead of Ann Amadi, the then-Registrar of the Judiciary.

Gachagua rose to Deputy President just five years after joining Parliament. His political journey mirrors the tale of Simon Makonde, whose life moved quickly. Rigathi Gachagua’s climb from MP to Deputy President was rapid. But his fall from grace was just as fast.

Elected as Mathira MP in 2017, Gachagua served only one term. He then became Kenya’s 12th Deputy President in 2022. He and Ruto promised to uplift the “hustlers” in the economy. They won the election with 50.4% of the vote, defeating Raila Odinga and Martha Karua. Yet, within two years, Gachagua’s relationship with Ruto began to crack. His allies accused the President of betrayal.

Gachagua soon declared himself the guardian of State House. He promised to prioritize Kenya Kwanza supporters in government jobs. Many felt excluded by his remarks. He openly told the opposition to wait their turn. Facing impeachment threats, Gachagua stood firm. He claimed his Mt Kenya supporters still backed him.

As the impeachment gained momentum, Gachagua’s future dimmed. He faced charges of inciting rebellion and blocking projects. Key leaders from Mt Kenya shifted their support to Kindiki. Gachagua now faces a common challenge for Kenyan vice presidents. Many before him also clashed with their presidents or faced sidelining. His once-bright political future now seems uncertain.
