Rigathi Gachagua’s Impeachment: Senate Showdown Begins

Rigathi Gachagua's Impeachment: Senate Showdown Begins

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces a critical showdown in the Senate. He fights to block his impeachment. The National Assembly voted against him, with 282 MPs in favor. Gachagua now needs at least 23 senators to support him. He hopes divisions in politics and his Mt. Kenya base will help his case.

Gachagua relies on the Senate’s independent voting record. He has won support from senators like James Murango, Karungo Thang’wa, Joe Nyutu, and John Methu. Wiper Party senators have also backed him. This support could be vital to overturn the impeachment.

Imenti Central MP Moses Kirima said some MPs believed CS Kithure Kindiki would replace Gachagua. Now, regional unity might shift support to Gachagua.

Gachagua has also turned to the courts. He filed petitions to stop the Senate proceedings. Despite this, the trial will likely proceed. A three-judge bench will hear the cases.

The Senate session will include witness testimonies, cross-examinations, and debates. Gachagua needs at least 45 out of 67 senators to support him. If he fails, he could become the first Deputy President removed under the current Constitution.
