Rigathi Gachagua Criticizes Ruto’s Leadership and Policies

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto. He claims their fallout resulted from opposing Ruto’s unpopular policies. Gachagua now agrees with Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision not to support Ruto in 2022. Kenyatta had backed Raila Odinga, who narrowly lost to Ruto.

Gachagua played a key role in delivering Mt. Kenya votes to Ruto. He became Ruto’s running mate in 2022. However, he served as deputy president for only two years. Parliament impeached him in October 2024 and replaced him with Prof. Kithure Kindiki. Gachagua now calls the experience painful but valuable.

In an interview, Gachagua accused Ruto of running a one-man government. He claimed the president focused on racketeering instead of public welfare. Gachagua criticized the government’s economic policies. He called recent claims of economic improvement misleading and out of touch.

Rigathi Gachagua also condemned certain government projects.  Gachagua called the Social Health Insurance Fund wasteful and the housing program flawed. He argued that housing should be left to private developers and  blamed the administration’s high taxes for public discontent.

He further criticized security agencies for human rights violations accusing them of abductions and extrajudicial killings. Gachagua revealed he had warned Ruto about these incidents. He urged the president to stop denying the truth and take action.

Gachagua hinted at working with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. He described Kalonzo as a potential ally. He plans to consult Mt. Kenya leaders before announcing his 2027 plans. Gachagua remains focused on opposing Ruto’s leadership. He has vowed to support policies that reflect public interests.
