Rebecca Miano nomination as Attorney-General marks a historic step for women in Kenya’s justice sector. If approved by Parliament, she will join Chief Justice Martha Koome and Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu. This relates to leading the justice system. The Supreme Court, observing the one-third gender rule, includes CJ Koome, DCJ Mwilu, and Justice Njoki Ndung’u. Miano will be Kenya’s ninth AG and the first woman to hold this office.
The AG position has been held by several predecessors, starting with Charles Mugane Njonjo (1963-1979). He was followed by James Karugu, Joseph Kamere, Matthew Guy Muli. Then Amos Wako (1991-2011), Githu Muigai (2011-2018), and Kihara Kariuki (2018-2022).
President William Ruto appointed Justin Muturi as AG, but later dismissed him along with other Cabinet members amid protests. Miano, comes to recognition as a fellow by the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya in October 2023. She has also been the managing director of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company. She has served as an advocate of the High Court and a Certified Public Secretary. Also served on the finance committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya.
