In early 2023, Kenya saw a major political shift. Opposition leader Raila Odinga began reconciliation with President William Ruto. Previously, Odinga refused to recognize Ruto as the legitimate 2022 election winner. Odinga then led months of anti-government protests. These escalated after Parliament passed the Finance Bill 2024. The protests sparked unrest, but Odinga stepped in to ease tensions. This move led to the creation of the National Dialogue Committee. The committee aims to mediate between the government and opposition on urgent issues.
Odinga kept ODM in the opposition. However, his support for Ruto on specific issues shows a pragmatic shift. This alliance aligns with Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, which Ruto supports. Odinga nominated key ODM officials for Cabinet roles to strengthen the relationship. He assured ODM members that the party remains in opposition. He stated that any further cooperation would need a “national conversation” on key issues.
Raila Odinga has shifted from Ruto’s rival to a stabilizing force. This shift is critical as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces impeachment. Gachagua is accused of undermining Ruto and backing the Gen Z protests. Odinga’s allies supported his removal. Analysts say this alliance strengthens Ruto’s government and expands his political support. Ruto seeks backing in Odinga’s Nyanza region for the 2027 election.
Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Odinga’s brother, hinted at a possible coalition if Ruto keeps his promises. Observers believe Odinga’s potential AUC chairmanship in 2025 could lead to a political pact. This emerging alliance could mark a transformative period in Kenyan politics, positioning Odinga as a key influence in Kenya’s future.
