Raila Odinga stood out during the African Union Chairperson debate on Friday. He faced Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard James Randriamandrato. His campaign team declared his performance exceptional.
Prof. Makau Mutua, a campaign ally, said Odinga is ready to lead from “Day One.” Musalia Mudavadi praised his leadership and debate skills. Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’oei called him a unifier Africa needs. Political strategist Pauline Njoroge described him as a visionary leader.
Odinga addressed Africa’s challenges, including peace, security, and economic reforms. He demanded two permanent seats with veto powers for Africa at the UN Security Council. Alo, Raila criticized the UN’s outdated structure and advocated for AU reforms.
Raila promised to ensure member states pay their dues to the AU and also outlined a vision to transform Africa into a manufacturing hub. He proposed fostering intra-African trade and building logistical hubs. He highlighted youth empowerment and climate action as key priorities.
Supporters praised his performance. Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o commended his calm and purposeful responses. Somaliland’s Abdirashid Ibrahim lauded his transformative strategies for Africa’s growth.
However, critics voiced reservations. Former MP Kabando wa Kabando expressed doubts about Odinga’s candidacy. Some questioned his ability to deliver despite his strong debate showing.
The February election will determine Odinga’s fate. His leadership vision continues to spark debate and divide opinions.
