Prof. Kithure Kindiki nominated as the new deputy president. If the nomination is approved by parliament, Kindiki will replace impeached Rigathi Gachagua. Kindiki, Kenya’s interior minister, has come under fire for how police have handled the country’s protests.
President William Ruto has selected Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as his new deputy, just one day after the Senate impeached Ruto’s previous deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula approved the nominee in parliament on Friday.
Before Kindiki can be sworn in, Parliament must first accept his appointment.
However, a Kenyan court halted Kindiki’s appointment as the new deputy president, and the Senate upheld the impeachment allegations against his predecessor until October 24. Prof. Kithure Kindiki nominated as new deputy president
Kindiki, a close supporter of Ruto, has served as the country’s interior minister during Ruto’s two years as President, but has faced criticism for alleged police violence during Kenya’s anti-government rallies earlier this year.
He was previously among the top contenders to become Ruto’s running mate ahead of the 2022 elections.
Ruto not yet given any public statement on the impeachment.
In recent months, Gachagua has spoken about being side lined, while at the same time, local media reported of him falling out with President Ruto. He also accused of supporting the anti-government protest that broke out in June.
He is the first deputy president impeached since the process introduced in Kenya’s revised 2010 constitution.
