At least 85 people died in a plane crash at Muan International Airport on Sunday.
The Jeju Air flight from Bangkok veered off the runway during landing and caught fire after the crash. The National Fire Agency reported that the plane carried 175 passengers and six crew members. Officials confirmed that at least two passengers were Thai nationals.
Lee Jung-hyun from the Muan Fire Department blamed faulty landing gear for the crash. He also mentioned bird strikes and bad weather as possible causes. Investigators are still working to confirm the exact cause.
The victims included 45 women and 35 men. Officials have not shared more details yet. Rescuers saved one passenger and one crew member. Ninety-four people are still missing.
The crash happened at 9:03 a.m. local time. Firefighters put out the flames by 9:46 a.m.
Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae apologized publicly. He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and took full responsibility. The airline promised support for the affected families.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for urgent rescue efforts. The Ministry of Interior and Safety mobilized resources to assist. The Defense Ministry sent soldiers and equipment to help.
Over 700 personnel are involved in search and recovery operations. Officials set up a temporary mortuary at the airport.
Choi and other officials visited the crash site. They pledged to help survivors and provide updates.
