Nihon Hidankyo, a group of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has won the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. This prestigious award recognizes their tireless fight for a world free of nuclear weapons. These survivors, known as “hibakusha,” share their poignant stories to prevent future nuclear tragedies.
Moreover, the Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Nihon Hidankyo for its unwavering dedication to nuclear disarmament. The committee emphasized that the hibakusha’s testimonies vividly illustrate the true horror of nuclear weapons. Consequently, their narratives highlight the urgent need to stop the use of such weapons to avert future tragedies. In doing so, they remind the world of the immense suffering caused by atomic bombs.
In addition, Toshiyuki Mimaki, co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, reacted with deep emotion upon receiving the award. Speaking in Hiroshima, he stated that this recognition significantly boosts their mission for nuclear disarmament. “This prize will strengthen our call to abolish nuclear weapons and achieve lasting peace,” Mimaki asserted.
Furthermore, Japan’s hibakusha have faced numerous challenges, including health issues and discrimination from radiation exposure. Today, over 106,000 atomic bomb survivors live in Japan, with an average age of 85.6 years. Their powerful stories continue to inspire the global effort to eliminate nuclear weapons.
