Nigeria's Doctors Strike, Demands Release of Kidnapped Colleague

Doctors in Nigeria’s public hospitals have launched a seven-day nationwide strike, demanding the release of their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola. Kidnappers abducted Dr. Popoola, an ophthalmologist and mother of five, from her home on December 27. They also took her husband and nephew. While her husband gained release in March after a ransom was reportedly paid, the kidnappers continue to hold Dr. Popoola and her nephew.

The doctors have decided to halt all medical services, including emergency care, during the strike. Their action shows widespread concern and anger among Nigeria’s medical professionals.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, president of the doctors’ association, voiced the collective pain of the medical community. He told the BBC, “It’s been eight months of agony for her, her family, and her colleagues. The life of doctors should matter to Nigeria’s.” His statement highlights the emotional toll on Dr. Popoola’s loved ones and colleagues.

The strike draws attention to the broader security issues in Nigeria, where healthcare professionals feel increasingly targeted. The medical community is urging the government and security agencies to take swift action. They want authorities to prioritize the safety of all citizens, especially those who dedicate their lives to saving others. As the strike continues, pressure mounts on the authorities to secure Dr. Popoola release and protect other vulnerable professionals.
