Nigerians under 24-Hour Curfew due to high-Cost of living Protests
Millions of Nigerians in northern are under a 24-hour curfew . This is due to widespread protests against the escalating cost of living. The governments in Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, and Katsina states have enforced the curfew, ordering locals to remain indoors on Friday. This move aims to prevent further protests, which authorities claim have been hijacked by “hoodlums” intent on looting and vandalizing property.
Authorities argue that the curfew is a necessary measure to restore order, citing instances of violence and theft that have marred the protests. There is a significant security presence throughout the country, as the movement’s organizers have planned nine more “days of rage.” On the first day of protests, the northern city of Kano witnessed the largest turnout. Police responded with live bullets, tear gas, and hot water cannons in an attempt to disperse the thousands of demonstrators. Unfortunately, the clashes resulted in the deaths of three people, with many others sustaining injuries.
In addition to the violence, looters took advantage of the chaos. They broke into a warehouse near the Kano governor’s house, leading to significant theft. Police have since arrested 269 individuals and recovered numerous 25-litre groundnut oil cartons and other stolen items.
The protests highlight the growing discontent among Nigerians, who are grappling with the soaring cost of living. The movement has garnered substantial support, indicating widespread frustration with the current economic conditions. As the situation unfolds, the government faces increasing pressure to address the underlying issues driving the unrest.
The curfew and the heavy-handed response by security forces have sparked further debate about the balance between maintaining order and respecting citizens’ rights to protest. As the country braces for more scheduled demonstrations, the government’s actions in the coming days will be crucial in shaping the nation’s path forward.
