Netanyahu and Biden Push for Gaza Hostage Deal

Netanyahu and Biden Push for Gaza Hostage Deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden about Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Netanyahu updated Biden on his instructions to Israeli negotiators in Doha to release hostages.

Biden repeated his call for a Gaza ceasefire, hostage release, and more humanitarian aid. The White House highlighted regional changes, including the 2024 Lebanon ceasefire, Syria’s regime collapse, and Iran’s weaker position.

This was their first public discussion since October 2024. Netanyahu also met Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Both oppose Biden’s plan, which ties a hostage release to a ceasefire. They demand continued fighting until all hostages are freed and Hamas is defeated.

Negotiators in Doha, including Mossad Chief David Barnea, remain cautiously optimistic. U.S. officials aim to reach a deal before Biden leaves office. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, echoed optimism but acknowledged challenges.

Protests in Israel are pressuring the government to act. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar affirmed Israel’s commitment to a deal. Netanyahu’s spokesperson stressed the prime minister’s ongoing efforts.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan reported progress but warned a deal is not certain. U.S. envoy Brett McGurk continues negotiations in Doha. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said any deal would reflect Biden’s proposal.

Netanyahu faces growing pressure as the deadline for a potential agreement approaches.
