On the third and last day of their summit, NATO leaders are expected in Washington for additional discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine.
The 32 nations that make up the alliance promised to invest $40 billion (or $43 billion). Over the course of the following year and said on Wednesday that Ukraine’s route to NATO membership was “irreversible.”
But it was less than the multiyear plan that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had suggested.
The leaders of the alliance will now focus on the east. Talking about shared security concerns with South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
On Wednesday, Lin Jian, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, charged that NATO was “acting beyond its characterization as a regional defensive alliance. Thus inserting itself into the Asia-Pacific to incite confrontation and rivalry.”

Russia’s summer onslaught in Ukraine is still ongoing, according to Gustav Gressel, a senior policy fellow. At the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), and Ukraine’s military forces are already severely depleted.
“Ukraine has battled the Russian offensive quite well so far,” said Gressel. “By autumn, of course, the tide could stall, but Western assistance is good for the end of the year, or into the spring.”
