A state funeral will take place at Washington National Cathedral for the former President Jimmy Carter who will be buried in Georgia. Their home will serve as the final resting place. The venue is known for honoring presidents and other prominent figures.
The NYSE and Nasdaq will close their markets on January 9. The day marks the National Day of Mourning for Carter. “Jimmy Carter, with humble roots as a farmer and family man, devoted his life to public service,” said NYSE Group President Lynn Martin. She also added, “The NYSE will honor his service by closing our markets.” Nasdaq President Tal Cohen said, “We mourn Carter’s loss and will close U.S. markets to celebrate his life.” Both exchanges also expressed condolences to his family.
Carter is the only U.S. president to live to 100. He was also the first Naval Academy graduate to hold the office. All five living presidents honored his legacy. Bill Clinton praised his civil rights work and peace efforts like the Camp David Accords. George W. Bush admired his convictions and dedication to service. Barack Obama highlighted his integrity, quoting Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize speech. Donald Trump acknowledged their political differences but respected Carter’s commitment to the nation.
President Joe Biden called Carter a man of “character, courage, and hope.” Biden also declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning. He ordered flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days. Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
This tradition of honoring presidents dates back to 1865. The NYSE first observed it after President Lincoln’s assassination.
