Johnson Sakaja, Nairobi Governor, has announced plans to overhaul the city’s transport system. During Jamhuri Day celebrations, he stressed the importance of partnerships with the national government and international financiers. The goal is to tackle Nairobi’s chronic traffic congestion.
Sakaja revealed efforts to rehabilitate roads and implement a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. “By the start of next year, Nairobians will see significant changes on our roads,” Sakaja said. He assured residents that the road rehabilitation project, in partnership with the national government, will bring visible improvements by January 2024.
A key focus of his address was the Clean Core BRT project. This project aims to provide a modern, sustainable transport solution. Sakaja also announced a breakthrough in securing funding from international partners. “Yesterday, I met a delegation from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency,” he said. These global collaborations are crucial for the success of the project.
The BRT system is designed to ease congestion and reduce pollution. It will provide a safer, more efficient alternative to Nairobi’s current matatu network. The system will also improve air quality and mobility for residents.
Governor Sakaja acknowledged the challenges in transforming Nairobi’s transport sector. However, he is also confident that the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders will drive progress. He urged residents to stay patient as the city works towards better infrastructure and services.
