Muhammad Yunus to head interim government

The interim government of Bangladesh is under economist and prominent member of civil society Muhammad Yunus. Amidst a violent rebellion, Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister, resigned and left the nation.

Following Premier Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus will head Bangladesh’s interim administration, according to the office of President Mohammad Shahabuddin.

Bangladeshi student protest leaders have declared that they preferred an interim administration advised by Yunus than one headed by the army.

Following a meeting with Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waker-uz-Zaman, the statement was made. The day before, the general had said that an interim administration would be constituted. However, he did not specify who would lead it.

On Tuesday, the president of Bangladesh also dissolved the legislature.

One of the demonstrators’ main demands were the legislature’s dissolution.

Before his announcement as chairman, Yunus’ office had earlier on Tuesday revealed that he had consented to serve as an adviser for an interim administration.

Who is Nobel laureaute Yunus?

Yunus, who is reportedly in Paris, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. For his work in granting micro-credit to impoverished Bangladeshis from his Grameen Bank. Often enabling them to pull themselves out of poverty by building small businesses.
