Manchester United has appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach. He becomes their sixth since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Amorim, will officially join from Sporting Lisbon on November 11. The 39-year-old Portuguese will coach until June 2027.
Amorim ranks among Europe’s top young coaches. He is known for his tactical skill and innovative ideas. United paid Sporting €11 million to activate his release clause. Amorim will make his Premier League debut against Ipswich on November 24, followed by his first home game against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on November 28. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, filling in after Erik ten Hag’s exit, will manage the team for the next three games.
The club has expressed excitement over Amorim’s arrival. They describe him as one of Europe’s “most exciting” young coaches. His coaching career started with Casa Pia in Portugal, then progressed to Braga’s B team, and later, the main squad. While at Braga, he achieved a major away win over Benfica and won the League Cup. Sporting then hired him as Portugal’s most expensive manager, and he quickly led them to their first league title in 19 years. Last season, he secured another league victory for Sporting.
Amorim’s arrival signals a strategic shift for Manchester United, which is now partly owned by Ineos. This move highlights United’s focus on his strengths in player development, tactical innovation, and energetic leadership. United’s leadership sees him as “the most exciting young coach in Europe.” They are optimistic that Amorim will guide the club into a promising new era.
