KVA Urges Temporary Halt to Livestock Vaccination Campaign

KVA Urges Temporary Halt to Livestock Vaccination Campaign

President William Ruto  unveiled plans to vaccinate 22 million cattle and 50 million goats and sheep next year. He encouraged livestock owners to prepare for the campaign.

However, the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) has asked the government to stop the livestock vaccination campaign. KVA wants all stakeholders, including veterinary experts, farmers, and local leaders, fully involved.

In a statement, KVA supported efforts to control diseases like foot-and-mouth and peste des petits ruminants. However, it raised concerns about issues affecting the campaign’s success.

Veterinarians blamed a credibility crisis in the Kenya Kwanza administration for eroding public trust. They also criticized the lack of public sensitization, which has caused resistance and misinformation.

KVA said devolving veterinary services worsened coordination problems. Many county veterinary departments lack enough resources. Politicization of the campaign has also distracted the public from its main goal of disease control.

Dr. Kelvin Osore, KVA’s chairperson, called for a delay in the campaign. He said public awareness is needed to ensure livestock owners understand vaccination benefits.

“Rushing this program without public support will lead to failure,” Dr. Osore warned. He added that it could fuel suspicions of budget misuse.

KVA proposed a risk-based approach to focus on diseases affecting specific areas. It urged the government to address public concerns and share clear information.

The veterinarians also called for a strong awareness campaign to educate farmers. They want the government to improve coordination by revisiting the devolution of veterinary services.

KVA highlighted a shortage of veterinarians. Only 700 out of 2,800 registered vets work in public service.

President William Ruto defended the vaccination program. He assured Kenyans that locally made vaccines are safe and effective.
