North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened to use nuclear weapons against South Korea if attacked. State media reported this on Friday. The threat followed a warning from South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon said the North’s use of nuclear weapons would mean the “end of its regime.”
Kim’s comments came after he visited a uranium enrichment facility. This raised concerns about North Korea’s nuclear activities. While touring an army base, Kim said the North would use its nuclear weapons if the South violated its sovereignty.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are high. North Korea has boosted its nuclear production and strengthened ties with Russia. These actions have alarmed many in the West. Kim jong threat seemed to target Yoon, who recently showcased South Korea’s powerful weapons, including the Hyunmoo-5 missile.
North Korea recently called South Korea its “principal enemy.” This marks a shift from its earlier goal of peaceful reunification. The North may soon cancel an agreement on reunification, increasing tensions. Meanwhile, the US flew a B-1B bomber over South Korea in a show of support. (CNN)
