Kherson Residents Accuse Russia of Civilians Drone Strikes

Residents in Kherson claim that Russia is deliberately targeting civilians with drone strikes. Since the fall, these drones have caused several attacks. This includes pedestrians, vehicles, and ambulances, leading to at least 14 deaths and over 200 injuries.

A humanitarian volunteer recalled a moment when a drone hovered overhead before dropping a grenade near a shelter. The small size and speed of the drones make them difficult for Ukrainian forces to counter, giving civilians little chance to escape.

According to an analyst from the Institute for the Study of War, many Russian drones fly below air defense systems, overwhelming Ukraine’s detection capabilities. Russian Telegram channels claim that the drones target vehicles to disrupt Ukrainian troop movements, though much of the footage shows them striking civilian cars instead.

Russia has not officially acknowledged the “Red Zone” in Kherson, where authorities treat all vehicle movement as a target. Despite this, residents feel fearful and compare their situation to being hunted.

Russian bloggers celebrate these attacks by posting videos online that show drones targeting and mocking civilians. One video, geolocated by CNN, captures a drone dropping explosives near a woman riding a bicycle.

Although international law forbids targeting civilians, Ukraine and international organizations accuse Russia of committing war crimes. Russia continues to deny targeting civilians despite the mounting evidence. (Courtesy of CNN)
