Kenya’s Ministry of Health confirms fourth Mpox case
Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health kenya, reported that a truck driver traveling from Mombasa to Rwanda tested positive. The driver fell ill and couldn’t continue his journey. Authorities tested him at Kikopey in Gilgil, where he received a positive result. “The Gilgil Sub-County Rapid Response Team acted quickly,” Muthoni stated. They moved the patient to the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital isolation center, where he remains in stable condition.
Earlier Mpox cases occurred in Taita-Taveta, Busia, and Nairobi counties. Yesterday, authorities tested two more people, but the results are still pending. The government of kenya is also tracking 30 contacts linked to the confirmed cases in Busia, Mombasa, Nairobi, and Nakuru. In the past 24 hours, officials screened 16,533 travelers at entry points, bringing the total to 599,380.
Suspected Case Causes Concern in Isiolo
In Isiolo County, officials discovered a suspected Mpox case at Kulamawe market, causing concern. Health officials are now tracing customers who visited a barber in the past week. Bisharo Hassan, Isiolo’s Public Health Chief Officer, confirmed they sent a team to collect samples and identify contacts. The 27-year-old barber hasn’t traveled recently. Kulamawe, 79 kilometers from Isiolo town, is a busy area. The patient is currently in isolation. Precautionary measures are in place as they await test results. The county is also preparing more isolation spaces in hospitals.
Dr. Sultani Matendechero, Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Health also emphasized the importance of strong surveillance and contact tracing. “We have many suspected cases,” he said. “But we must focus on the confirmed ones.”
Garbatulla Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Nyakundi noted the barber’s skin lesions were worsening despite treatment. Meanwhile, Meru County’s Chief Officer for Health Services, Dr. Joseph Wahome, also instructed hospitals to prepare isolation areas.
The new Mpox case has raised concerns about health protocols. The role of Director General of Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth, remains under scrutiny. Dr. Amoth had not responded to inquiries by press time.
