Kawira Mwangaza's Dismissal to Be Decided Next Week

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza will learn her fate next week when the Senate decides on her impeachment. The Senate plans to conduct the impeachment trial on Monday and Tuesday. Having rejected a proposal to form an 11-member special committee to investigate the charges against her. Instead, they chose the plenary route, allowing all senators to participate in the proceedings.

Governor Kawira faces impeachment for the third time since taking office in 2022. The Meru County Assembly strongly supported her removal, with 49 out of 69 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) accusing her of gross constitutional violations, misconduct, and abuse of office.

As the impeachment trial approaches, senators are under increasing pressure. Several lawmakers have reported receiving messages from Generation Zoomer youths in Meru, urging them to consider the impact of their decision on the county’s future.

Initially, the Senate Majority Leader proposed forming a special committee to investigate the charges against Governor Kawira. This proposed committee included senators from various counties, such as Bomet’s Hillary Sigei, Garissa’s Abdul Hajji, and Nyeri’s Wahome Wamatinga. However, the majority of senators rejected this approach, despite strong support from Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that, with the committee option off the table, the plenary will conduct the investigation. The Senate, currently on a short recess, will reconvene for a special session on August 19 and 20, 2024, to address the matter. The outcome of this trial will determine whether Governor Kawira remains in office or is removed.
